Country Counsel – Kazakhstan

About the role

Citi is seeking a Country Counsel to provide legal support to the Citigroup Country Officer and senior management in Kazakhstan. The role ensures the bank’s franchise is protected and that legal risks are identified, assessed, and managed in line with local regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Advise the Country Officer and senior management on franchise legal issues and regulatory developments.
• Monitor business activities for potential regulatory concerns and proactively address franchise risks.
• Participate in strategic decisions, crisis management teams, and internal investigations from a legal and reputational perspective.
• Maintain relationships with local regulators and act as a primary legal interface alongside the Country Officer.
• Collaborate with regional counsel, compliance, and business counsel to assess and mitigate legal risks.
• Represent Citi in industry associations and stay informed of legal issues affecting peer institutions.
• Serve as a member of the Country Coordinating Committee.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with substantial experience in the financial services sector.
• Deep understanding of Kazakhstan’s legal and regulatory environment.
• Proven ability to advise senior management on complex legal and regulatory matters.
• Strong proactive approach to identifying and managing franchise and compliance risks.
• Experience in crisis management, internal investigations, and regulatory liaison.
• Ability to work collaboratively across business lines and with external regulators.
