Chief Accountant

About the role

SMEC is seeking an experienced Chief Accountant to manage accounting operations, financial reporting, and statutory compliance in Kazakhstan, ensuring alignment with local regulations and IFRS.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily accounting operations and maintain accurate financial records.
• Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing and reporting.
• Ensure compliance with Kazakhstan's accounting standards, tax regulations, and statutory reporting requirements.
• Prepare and review financial statements, tax returns, and management reports.
• Maintain the general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, and effective financial controls.
• Coordinate external audits and liaise with auditors, tax authorities, and banks.
• Monitor accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash flow.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and regional financial reporting.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field.
• 8-12 years of accounting and finance experience, including 3-5 years in a senior finance leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of Kazakhstan's accounting standards, tax regulations, statutory reporting, and IFRS.
• Fluency in Russian and professional working proficiency in English; Kazakh knowledge is a plus.

Required skills

• Experience with 1C Accounting, SAP or Oracle ERP systems.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Proficiency in preparing financial statements and tax compliance documentation.
• Understanding of IFRS and internal control frameworks.
