Software Engineer - AI Applications

About the role

Nazarbayev University's Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI) is hiring a Software Engineer in Astana. ISSAI was founded in September 2019 to drive research and innovation in the digital sphere of Kazakhstan, focusing on AI research and building national capacity in the field. The engineer works on back-end systems for AI applications and research projects.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable back-end systems for AI applications and research projects.
• Collaborate with AI researchers, data scientists and other developers to understand and implement requirements.
• Develop, test and maintain high-quality software solutions for AI applications.
• Take part in the full software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and design to coding, testing and deployment.
• Work with cross-functional teams to turn research findings into scalable software.
• Improve internal coding standards and best practices.
• Debug and troubleshoot complex issues, performing root cause analysis.
• Document software designs and code for maintainability and knowledge sharing.
• Implement security and data protection measures.
• Develop robust APIs supporting developers and mobile applications.
• Contribute to open source projects or published research.

Required profile

• Higher-professional education, preferably from an institution teaching in English.
• Preferably a Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Development or an equivalent field.
• Priority specialisations: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Computational Science.
